Fire Protection Career Development Courses (CDCs) - IFSAC Era

The current CDCs are based upon attaining certain national certifications as required for attaining Air Force skill levels (such as apprentice, journeymen, & craftsmen).  Meaning that the new CDCs, are individual courses based upon the many different national certifications.  Within the Department of Defense (DoD), each skill level (for military) or job position (for civilians) requires different certifications.

The new CDCs are, for the most part, formatted as volumes of outlines and objectives which must be studied using additional publications such as national fire codes, reference books, and videos.  Examples include National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) documents such as National Fire Codes and handbooks, International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) training manuals, and many others.  Course objectives include, as a minimum, all of the objectives listed in the NFPA standard(s) for the appropriate certification level.  At the end of each course the student takes a proctored exam (written and/or practical) covering all portions of that particular course.   Upon successful completion of all course requirements and approval of the local fire chief the student is granted the certification for that particular course through application to the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency (AFCESA).  AFCESA is the DoD executive agency for managing the DoD Firefighter Certification System.

While these CDCs have been in use since 1994 only recently (November 1998) have they been evaluated for college credit recommendations by the American Council on Education (ACE).  Fortunately the evaluations cover the CDCs from their issue dates to the present.
